According to the 1850 census he was born in "Va". Parents are unknown. He married first, Keziah Anderson, daughter of Nathaniel and Susannah Anderson, sometime before 1800. They had nine (9) children before she died around 1817 in Oglethorpe Co., GA. In 1818, he married Mrs. Amy (Powell) Owen, widow of Capt. William Owen and they had five (5) children before she died in 1850. He is found in Oglethorpe Co., GA (1800, 1810 censuses and 1818 marriage record), Greene Co., GA (1820 census) and Walton Co., GA. (1830 and 1850 census). Following the death of his second wife Amy in 1850, he lived with his son James Anderson Armistead in Newton County during the last years of his life.
Had total of 14 children by his two wives, but only 11 were still alive at the time of his death.
He served as a "private" during the War of 1812 from Oglethorpe county, Georgia in Capt. Burwell Pope's company attached to Lt. Col. Jetright Thomas' 2d Georgia militia. He received bounty land based on this service.
His will had to be adjudicated by the Georgia Supreme Court in the May term of 1861.
