Edward J. "Moose" Alexander, age 84, passed away Saturday, October 24, 2009, at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, IL following a courageous, lengthy battle with cancer. Ed was a member of Our Lady of Consolation Parrish and the Knights of Columbus Council #4047. He graduated from Froebel High School-Class of 1943. He joined the United States Navy at the age of 17 and served with honor in the Pacific Theater during WWII on the USS Marcus Island. Ed was employed by the Gary Police Dept. until his retirement with 21 years of service, during that time he was elected to serve on the police pension board for 3 consecutive terms. He was also employed as a security officer with US Steel as well as Saint Mary Mercy & Methodist Hospitals in Gary. He was active in American Legion Post #0367 and the Fraternal Order of Police-Ben K. Perry Lodge #57. Preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Helyne Polturich, Joan (Byron) Gifford, and son Bruce Alexander. Ed is survived by wife of 61 years, Gertrude, daughter, Christine (Raymond) Wilkinson, granddaughter, Andrea (Gary) Monix, grandsons, Christopher and Randy White, great-grandson, Parker James Monix, brother and sisters-in-law, Maryanne (Jack) Dienes, Edward (Irene) Komisarcik, Joseph (Beverly) Komisarcik and many nieces and nephews. Ed was a thoughtful, generous, and loving husband, father and grandpa. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2009, Burns Funeral Home, 9:00 am and to Our Lady of Consolation Church, 8303 Taft St, Merrillville, IN for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. with Msgr. John J. Siekierski officiating. Interment Calumet Park Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday from 2 to 8 pm at Burns Funeral Home 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, Indiana. Prayer Service and K of C, Msgr. Ryder Council Service Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. www.burnsfuneral.com
