*VICTIM OF THE 1857 MOUNTAIN MEADOWS MASSACRE*
Jesse Dunlap, Jr. was the fourth son of Jesse Dunlap, Sr. and his first wife Mary Williams, born 14 March 1818 in Warren County, Tennessee. On 1 March 1837 he married Mary M. Wharton, the daughter of Joshua B. Wharton and Elizabeth Ann Cooke, in Madison County, Arkansas. The couple resided in Madison County, before moving to Johnson County, and then Marion County, Arkansas. Jesse was a merchant, in partnership with his brother-in-law, William C. Mitchell.
Jesse Dunlap, Jr.'s brother, Lorenzo Dow Dunlap, was married to Nancy Jane Wharton, who was the sister of Jesse's wife Mary M. Wharton. With his older brother, Lorenzo Dow Dunlap and his family, Jesse Dunlap, Jr., his wife, and ten children, comprised "The Dunlap Train" that departed from Marion County, Arkansas in April of 1857 in conjunction with "The Mitchell Train".
Brothers Jesse Dunlap, Jr. and Lorenzo Dow Dunlap, were the maternal uncles of Charles Roark Mitchell and Joel Dyer Mitchell, whose families comprised "The Mitchell Train" from Marion County, Arkansas. Jesse, Jr. and Lorenzo's sister, Nancy Isabella Dunlap, was married to William C. Mitchell, who was the father of the two Mitchell brothers. William C. Mitchell, Jesse Jr's business partner, brother-in-law, and a former Arkansas State Senator, would later give a deposition that stated that Jesse Dunlap, Jr. had $320 in cash, 9 yoke of oxen, 30 head of cattle, 2 horses, 3 wagons, log chains, and fixtures, 3 guns, pistols and knives, and provisions, camp "fixins", and cooking articles, when he started for California.
Jesse Dunlap, Jr., his wife Mary M. (Wharton) Dunlap and 7 of their 10 children (Ellender, Nancy M., James D., Lucinda, Susannah, Margarette, and Mary Ann) died in the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Jesse Dunlap, Jr. was 39 years old when he died. His three youngest daughters, Rebecca Jane Dunlap, born 4 June 1851, Louisa Dunlap born 10 November 1853, and Sarah Elizabeth Dunlap, born 16 August 1856, survived the Massacre. The three surviving Dunlap girls were returned to Arkansas in 1859 and raised by their paternal uncle, James Douglas Dunlap, and his wife Linda (McMurray) Dunlap.
