Martha was a daughter of James and Catrina (Eckersen) Mackie of Rockland County, New York.

Along with her husband Jacob, Martha was one of the first white settlers in what is now Fox Lake, WI. They later joined her brother Thomas Mackie as two of the earliest white settlers in what is now Beaver Dam. Their daughter Henrietta is believed to have been the first white girl born there.
