Mary Eliza was born the day after Christmas in Illinois, 1837. She was the fifth child born. She came with her parents, Elijah Hawes and Catherine Floyd, to the Salt Lake Valley, in 1853. Mary joined Hyrum Curtis in marriage in the year 1859, in Provo, Utah. They were some of the original pioneer settlers of Newton, Cache County, Utah, in the winter of 1869. Mary died, July 26,1875, from complications of child birth. Mary and Hyrum are buried in the cemetery in Newton.
