Pearl was born to John Bruton Carpenter and Samantha Ellen Short in Pettigrew, Madison County, Arkansas. He was one of 10 children. He and his older brothers worked as farm laborers with his father.

The family made the move by wagon to Oklahoma about 1910. They settled in Broken Arrow where he worked as a blacksmith in his father's shop next to the Katy Railway on South Main. By 1920 he was working, along with his brothers, in the oil fields. He was a tool dresser until the machinery he was working on blew up in his face and put out his left eye.

He married Susie Rebecca Campbell on September 29, 1923, in Wagoner, Wagoner County, Oklahoma. He supported his family by working an oil lease, share-cropping, and farming. He and Susie raised two children this way.

The Carpenter family moved to Silverton, Oregon, about 1943, to work in the shipyards for the war effort during WWII. Susie and June were certified welders, and Pearl and Don were lay-out men. They moved back to Oklahoma in 1946 with an additional family member, the granddaughter that they would raise to adulthood.

Pearl spent the remainder of his life fighting illness. He spent three years in Tallahany at the TB Sanitarium, and battled cancer on his return home. He spent his time raising gardens that Susie would can, and being the perfect grandfather/father for a young granddaughter. He died at home with his wife, daughter, and granddaughter.

Pearl was preceded in death by his parents, John Bruton and Samantha Ellen Short Carpenter; two sisters, Lucy Emma and May Matilda; and one brother, James Morgan, all who died in childhood. He is survived by his wife, Susie and granddaughter Cheryl Lee Fischl, of the home; a daughter, June Elizabeth Raney, of Broken Arrow; a son, Donald Carpenter, of Tulsa; and granddaughter LaDonna Sue Carpenter of Tulsa. Four brothers; Dave, Claude and Henry of Broken Arrow, and Tommy of Woodland, California. Two sisters; Alice McFee of Bell, California, and Ola Whitaker, of Bethalto, Illinois. He will be laid to rest in Vernon Cemetery, Coweta, Oklahoma.

*There has been discussion about Pearl's middle name. He signed his draft card and social security card as Clint. I've been told it's Clinton in the family bible, but haven't seen it with my own eyes. As his brothers have the full names of past presidents, I'm assuming that it's supposed to be Clinton. Cheryl Moore, granddaughter.
