On the marker place at this spot by the State of Tennessee in 1927:
"Here lie David Crockett, and his wife, Elizabeth, the grandparents of Davy Crockett who were massacred near this spot by Indians in 1777".


Davy was named after his paternal grandfather, David "the Elder" who was killed in 1777, at his home, near today's Rogersville, Hawkins County, Tennessee, by Indians led by "Dragging Canoe". Elizabeth was also killed.
