HOLSTEIN, Iowa -- Leroy A. Bremer, 86, of Holstein passed away Monday, April 26, 2004, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa following a hard fought battle with cancer.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Holstein United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Todd Schlitter officiating. Burial will be in Holstein Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Dessel-Schmidt Post 225 of Holstein. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Barker Funeral Home in Holstein.
Leroy, the son of August and Agnes (Lohff) Bremer, was born Nov. 1, 1917, on the family farm southeast of Holstein. His early school years were spent at Logan No. 3 country school and then continued at Holstein High School. As a high school sophomore, the family moved to a farm west of Cushing, Iowa, where he continued his education at Cushing Consolidated High School. He graduated from there on May 8, 1935.
He farmed near Cushing for four years before being inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served his country from May 27, 1942 until his honorable discharge on Nov. 16, 1945. After attending several technical airplane mechanical schools, he worked as a mechanic, specifically on the B-17 and B-24 planes, during World War II. After completion of his active duty, he stayed involved with the American Legion.
On Feb. 5, 1943, he was united in marriage to Opal Beeson of rural Correctionville, Iowa, in Dakota City. This union of 61 years was blessed with five children, Kenneth, Donna, Robert, Donald and Lana. In 1945, the couple returned to the family farm and continued to farm in the Cushing area until 1966. At that time, the family moved to a farm south of Holstein, where they farmed until February 1987. They also raised cattle and Appaloosa horses during that time.
This was retirement time and they moved to the third generation Bremer home in Holstein. For the next 17 years, he enjoyed his 19 grandchildren, their activities and the growth of their families. In later years, special enjoyment came from his 21 great-grandchildren.
He spent many hours reading, listening and watching sports, observing wildlife, traveling with family, dancing, attending horse and cattle shows and sales, playing card games, riding his bicycle and having coffee at the Drive Inn with friends.
He was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Sept. 1, 1918. He joined the Cushing Methodist Church on March 29, 1959. His membership was transferred to the United Methodist Church in Holstein on Dec. 18, 1966.
Survivors include his wife, Opal; a son and his wife, Kenneth and Audrey of Blakesburg, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Donna and Paul McFarland of DeSoto, Iowa, a son and his wife, Donald and Ruth of Ida Grove, Iowa, a daughter and her husband, Lana and Kevin Conover of Holstein; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Gordan and Helen of Holstein; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert; grandsons, Todd and Wayne Bremer and Mathew and Michael Conover; and a sister and her husband, Irma and Richard Kitchen.
