Opened his own carriage-maker's shop in Jackson, PA where he worked for 14 years. In 1851 moved to Wells where he purchased 94 acres of uncultivated land. He worked his trade in the winter and farmed in the summer. His farm is a model, the fruit grown there is of the "finest and several varieties" He is a consistent member of the Baptist Church.
