Apostle, Evangelist and Saint. Originally a fisherman like his father, Zebedee and brother James, he became one of the first and youngest disciples of Jesus Christ. Based on New Testament scriptures, John was present during many major events. He alone, among the Apostles, is believed to have witnessed the crucifixion of Christ and took Mary, Jesus' mother into his care. Along with Peter, he took a leading role in the early development of the Catholic Church. Most agree that John is the author of the Gospel of John and three epistles in the New Testament. There is some debate whether he is also the author of its final book Revelation. He was the only apostle to die peacefully of old age in what now is Turkey. His feast day is December 27th.
