The son of William and Sarah Radford Munford married Lucy J. Taylor on 20 November 1828. Lucy died in 1835. George Munford again married on 29 November 1838 to Elizabeth T. Ellis. They had eleven children. During the Civil War Munford served as the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia. He reported directly to Governor John Letcher. Letcher delegated the responsibility of furnishing the Virginia State flag to the military units serving her to Munford. He signed the Virginia State Seal and had it imprinted on government documents. One shows on the Proclamation of Secession dated 14 June 1861.
