Trained as a lawyer, Johnson served in the U. S. Congress as a representative from Tennessee from 1829 to 1837 and again from 1839 to 1845. Appointed by President James Polk in 1845 to U. S. Postmaster General, he held that office until 1849. He was president of the Bank of Tennessee from 1854 to 1860.
