WILLIAM LLOYD ABARR
Mr. William Lloyd Abarr, age 82, of Altoona, Iowa, died November 28, 2000 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Mr. Abarr was born February 14, 1918, to Harlan and Minnie Abarr, at Redding, Iowa. He graduated from the Redding Consolidated high school in 1936.
He served in the U. S. Army tank battalion in World War II and was captured in North Africa by the Germans on his birthday, February 14, 1943. He was a prisoner of war in a German prison camp for 26 months until he was freed by Allied forces in 1945.
He was employed by John Deere Co. in Waterloo and Ankeny as a machinist until his retirement. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Johnson in 1955. They lived in Des Moines until moving to Altoona in 1987.
Mr. Abarr lived the past 12 years in Altoona and prior to that he lived in Des Moines. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and he volunteered for the Des Moines Food Pantry. He loved his church and like to be with people.
Preceding him in death were his wife Elizabeth on May 1, 1995; and eight brothers, Quentin, Kenneth, Emile, Barton, Lyle, Joe, D. C. and John.
Survivors include (omitted for privacy reasons).
Funeral services were held Friday, December 1, 2000 at Union Park Presbyterian Church in Des Moines. Pallbearers were Abarr nephews, Gary, David, Andrew, Charles, Weldon and Sam. Interment was in the Altoona Cemetery, Altoona.
Memorials may be made to the Union Park Presbyterian Church and Hospice of Central Iowa.
