He served as Amite County District 3 Supervisor for 16 years. He graduated from Oxford School in 1943. He was a supervisor for Crawford Corp. in Gloster for 15 years. He owned and operated Bateman's Grocery for 31 years and with the help of his son, Darrell, "Paw" operated Bateman's Furniture and Appliances for 17 years.

Paw was a faithful and active member of Mary Springs Church, wonderful husband, a loving father and grandfather. He loved reading, writing, genealogy, and politics. He adored his grandsons and said it was like a good shot of medicine when his great-grandsons, Bryce and Brooklynn, came through the door.

Preceded in death by his parents, Robert Huey Bateman and Gladys Timms Bateman; a son, James Ronald Bateman, infant granddaughters, Faith and Hope Bateman; and a brother, James K. Bateman.

Survived by his faithful and loving wife of 61 years, Flossie Whittington Bateman; one son and daughter-in-law, Rodney Darrell and Angie Van Norman Bateman; two grandsons, Darcy Brant and wife Brandi Walsh Bateman, and David Hunter Bateman; two special great-grandchildren, Bryce James and Brooklynn Jean Bateman; one sister, Ottrice Bateman Holland; two brothers, Excelle Bateman and Linus and wife Doll; one brother-in-law, James H. Whittington, four sisters-in-law, Dossie Whittington Spillman, Alverine Whittington Coleman, Sara Whittington McNabb, and Gussie Whittington Stokes; and numberous nieces, nephews, and friends.
