Her parents were Albert Galletin Boone and Anna Reid Hamilton Boone. Her father had a number of occupations, including fur trader, saloon and general store owner, Indian Agent, and census enumerator (1880 census), and was once called "the bravest man in the West." Agnes was the great-granddaughter of famed Indian fighter and pioneer, Daniel Boone. She met then Captain Otis at Fort Lyon, Bent County, Colorado, where he was the post commander and her father was the local Indian Agent. They were married on 24 October 1861 at Fort Lyon, CO. They had ten children: Minnie Boone Otis (born 3 Aug 1862), Elmer Spencer Otis (born 1 July 1864), Florence Price Otis (born 20 Aug 1866), Mollie Boggs Otis (born 18 Jan 1869), Francis Ignatius Otis (born 26 Oct 1871), Martha Mary Stanislaus Otis (born 17 June 1873), Albert Joseph Otis (born 5 Jan 1875), Joseph Tilford Otis (born 17 April 1877), Margaret Mary Otis (born 2 Dec 1878), and John Vincent Otis (born 22 July 1884).
