Altoona [PA] Mirror, 23 December 1929:
Mrs. Ellen Smeltzer Bowers, widow of George L. Bowers, died at 5 o'clock yesterday morning of pneumonia at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Howard Gates of Lakemont. She was born near Henrietta, June 17, 1854, and had resided for many years at Yellow Creek. Surviving are two sons and one daughter, Homer Bowers of Portage, William Bowers of Jeanette and Mrs. Howard Gates of Lakemont; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one brother, George Smeltzer [she had no brother named George, this would have been her brother, John] of Hopewell and two sisters, Mrs. John Malone of Johnson City, N. Y. and Mrs. Albert Bowers of Everett. Funeral services will be help at the Yellow Creek Reformed church at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Interment will be made in the Yellow Creek cemetery.
