Civil War Union Brevet Major General, US Senator. He served during the Civil War first as Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the 76th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, then as acting Assistant Inspector General on the staff of Major General William T. Sherman, then finally as Colonel and commander of the 180th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On March 13, 1865 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services in the Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina campaigns" and Major General, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious conduct during the war". After Alabama was readmitted to the Union as a State, he was elected as a Republican Senator from Alabama to the United States Senate, serving from 1868 to 1871. he was the brother-in-law of Union Army Brigadier Generals Charles R. Woods and William B. Woods.
