Mrs. Lingo Jones Brannen (Mrs. Aulbert J. Brannen Sr.), a resident of Statesboro for over 70 years, died Tuesday, January 2, 2007, at the age of 95. Mrs. Brannen was born in 1911 in Pembroke, one of four children born to William Lee and Cecelia Jane Patrick Jones. Her sister, Ossie Lee Jones Henderson (Savannah); and two brothers, William Grady Jones (Americus) and J.Z. Jones (Springfield); as well as her husband preceded her in death.
She attended grammar school in Pembroke and graduated from Bryan County High School, where she was captain of the basketball team and president of the Class of 1928. She then attended Georgia State Teachers College in Athens, Ga. and taught school in Pembroke.
In 1934, she married Aulbert J. Brannen Sr. and became his partner in both marriage and business for 56 years. They began Brannen's Tobacco Warehouses in Statesboro, which later expanded to North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky. "Ms. Lingo" stayed active in their tobacco business until she was 90.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Aulbert and Teresa Brannen, Bob and Sylvia Brannen and Jane and Bill Anderson, all of Statesboro; and twelve grandchildren, Beth Brannen Chandler, Lawton Brannen, Aulbert J. Brannen III, Anna Brannen Hagan, Betty Brannen Newton, Rob Brannen, Father Brett Brannen, Sylvia Brannen Thomas, Jamie Brannen, Steve Anderson, Aulbert Brannen "Bran" Anderson and Laurie Jane Anderson; as well as 25 great-grandchildren living in Statesboro, Atlanta, Dalton and Savannah.
Mrs. Brannen joined the Pembroke Christian Church in 1923 and transferred her church membership to the First Baptist Church of Statesboro in 1948, where among other activities she served as president of her Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Civic Garden Club, the Statesboro Women's Club and Forest Heights Country Club and was instrumental in the founding of Bulloch Academy.
She enjoyed traveling, visiting Europe, the Holy Land, Panama and Australia, as well as touring the United States with her sister. Her favorite hobby was fishing and cooking fried fish and "corn dodgers" shaped like donuts for her family at the Brannen pond. Breakfast and lunch at Snooky's were a normal part of her day for as long as anyone can remember - there she could meet and reminisce with old friends and family. She also loved watching and cheering for the Atlanta Braves.
Her family room overflowed with pictures of family, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ms. Lingo thoroughly enjoyed discussing their latest accomplishments. A truly gracious southern lady, she set a wonderful example for her children and grandchildren of commitment to her church and family and a strong work ethic. Known to her family as "Nana", she also left a legacy of generosity and loyalty to both her family and the family business. A sign in her home that reads "Nana … The next best thing to Santa Claus," sums up her giving spirit.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Dr. John Waters and Father Brett Brannen officiating. Burial will be in the Eastside Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
