Civil War Union Army Soldier. He first entered Federal service on April 25, 1861, when he was enlisted in the 3rd New Jersey Militia (New Jersey Adjutant General records lists his name for this unit as "George W. Tranger"). Mustered in as a Private in Company E on April 27, 1861, he served until he was mustered out on July 31, 1861.

He was then mustered in as a Private in Company A, 5th New jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 15, 1861. Transferred to Company B, he served a full three years in the field, and was honorably mustered out on August 31, 1864.
