Howard B. Lovering, 89, of Concord, died on September 7, 2010, at Concord Healthcare Center.

Mr. Lovering was born in Arlington, Mass. on November 26, 1920, and was raised in Carlisle. He was the son of the late James and Alice (Bearce) Lovering.

He was a graduate of Concord High School, Class of 1938, and he received his degree in physics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

For a few years he was employed at the General Electric plant in Lynn where he was an apprentice machinist and toolmaker. In 1945, he was inducted into the US Navy and served until July of 1946 when he was honorably discharged with a rank of Aviation Electronic Technician's Mate Third Class.

After his military discharge, he returned briefly to work at General Electric but left to join Baird Atomic, a technology firm in Cambridge and then the David W. Mann Co. which became part of Geophysics Corp. of America. Mr. Lovering held several patents in his name for optical physics.

Mr. Lovering was a resident of Bedford for 48 years before moving to Concord 7 years ago.

He was the husband of the late Lorelei (Fairchild) who died in 1998, father of the late Julie and David Lovering and brother of the late Stanley Lovering and Paula Powell.

He is survived by his two sons, James and his wife, Susan and Franklin, NH and Paul of Pepperell; three grandchildren, James S. Lovering Jr. and Michael Howard Lovering both of Connecticut and Tracey Ann Lovering Sirles of New Hampshire; and three great grandchildren Amelia, Bethany and Eric Lovering.

His funeral service will be held at the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Rd., Bedford, on Wed., Sept. 15, at 10 A.M. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, Sept. 14, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.

Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Topsfield.
