Mary was one of six victims of the fire that gutted the Germantown Community Centre in the Little Italy section of Germantown, Philadelphia, PA.

She, and five other little girls, were trapped on a metal balcony of the three-story building. The balcony was enclosed by wire mesh, which, incidentally, was designed to keep the children from falling into the street.

Thousands of people went to the victims' houses to pay their last respects and thousands more lined the streets of Chelten Avenue in Germantown the day of their funerals to say goodbye to the victims.

The other five victims of the fire were: Frances Pifani, Genevieve Di Pompeo, Mary Di Tommaso, Ida Visco, and Sylvia Bressi.
