Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. In 1861, he helped organize an infantry regiment, and was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in Company H, 10th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. He was later promoted Colonel in and placed in command of the 8th United States Colored Heavy Artillery. He participated in the Kentucky Wilderness Campaigns the entire Civil War. For dedication of duty, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in March 1865. After the war, he was admitted to the bar in 1867, commenced law practice in Columbus, Mississippi and was a member of the State Senate in 1868. In 1870, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first, Forty-second, and Forty-third Congresses, serving until 1875.
