William Henry Schamel came to the United States from Wurtemberg, Germany. He had been married in his native country, and had one son, but his wife died there, and his son married, and remained in Germany; so Mr. Schamel landed alone in this country, about the year 1807. He came directly to Maryland, and plied his trade, that of shoemaker, and taught school in English and German, at his home near Keedysville, during the rest of his life. Here he married Miss Elizabeth Poffenberger, who survived him for many years. They had eleven children: 1. Solomon, who died while a young man; 2. Susan, who married Jacob Boyer, and removed to Illinois; 3.Peter, who died near St. James, Washington County, leaving a son, George S. Schamel; 4. Catherine, who married Samuel Poffenberger, and removed to Illinois, where she died; 5. Elizabeth, who married Henry Mullen, lived many years in Sharpsburg, and then removed to the vicinity of Hagerstown, where she died; 6.
