FRANCES STEELE GARRETT Frances Steele Garrett of Lenbrook Square in Atlanta died August 27, 2005. She was born in Atlanta and was preceded in death by her husband Franklin M. Garrett, noted Atlanta historian and her only son, Perry Finney. Mrs. Garrett was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, Women of the Church, Meals-On-Wheels, Stephens Ministry, and on the Search Committee for Pastoral Care Minister. She was a graduate of Agnes Scott College (Class of 1937) and had served as President of her class for 25 years, was President of the 50 Year Club and Fund Chair of Agnes Scott for 3 years. In 1990 she was given the Outstanding Alumnae Award by the Agnes Scott College Alumnae Association in recognition of her Service to the College. Her other organizations included being a member of the DAR (Cherokee Chapter), National Society Magna Charta Dames, National Society of the Colonial Dames of America Atlanta Town Club, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School Guild, Atlanta Music Club, Friday Book Club, High Museum of Art, Atlanta Symphony Associates, Atlanta Historical Society, Roswell Historical Society, Henrietta Egleston Hospital for Children (volunteer), Crawford Long Hospital Auxiliary, English Speaking Union, Atlanta Opera Company, Inc., Historic Oakland Cemetery, Inc Guild, Joel Chandler Harris Association, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Callanwolde Foundation, Zoo Atlanta, Atlanta Preservation Center and the Georgia Trust for Historical Preservation. She is survived by sisters, Miriam Steele Jackson of Charlotte, NC., and Elizabeth Steele Huie of San Clemente, CA. and 3 grandchildren, Michael, Monica and Patrick Finney. Interment services will be held Thursday at 11 o'clock at Historic Oakland Cemetery; a memorial service will be held at 1 o'clock in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church (parking is available across the street). The family will receive friends after the memorial service in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church 1328 Peachtree St., NE Atlanta, GA 30309 or Atlanta History Center 130 West Paces Ferry Road Atlanta, GA 30305.
