Famous soldier who fought in the Civil War, the NW Rebellion in Canada and the Boer War. Known as Gatling Gun Howard. He is buried in Rustplaate, Transvaal, South Africa and his tombstone reads "In Memory of Major A.L. Howard, Howard's Scouts, Killed in Action, 7th February 1901.

The reason for Howard's nickname "Gatling Gun", or "Gat" for short - he came to Canada in 1885 as a representative of Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company (licensed makers of the famous Gatling Gun) to supervise and instruct in the use of the two Gatling Guns acquired by Canada for use in the North-West Rebellion. He actually operated the gun present at the Battle of Batoche. He remained in Canada, became a founder of the Dominion Cartridge Company, and was quite well-to-do when he volunteered for service in South Africa.

"Howard's Scouts," a Canadian regiment lead by "Gat" Howard of NW Rebellion fame. He was ambushed by the Boers and buried in South Africa.
