Son of Captain (Rev. War) John Morton and Lucinda Blakely Morton, Richard moved to Kentucky with his widowed mother and siblings in 1798 when he was only four years of age. On March 29, 1825 he married Cynthia "Sallie" Hon, daughter of Joseph P. Hon, Jr. and Eleanor Cave Hon. They had nine children. Following Sallie's death in December, 1843, Richard married Elizabeth Bartlett in 1845. They had one son. Richard and his father-in-law, Joseph Hon, were instrumental in establishing a Baptist Church on the South Fork of Red River which would eventually become a part of the Restoration Movement founded by Alexander Campbell and Barton W. Stone. Richard was a farmer. The actual death year for Richard is in question. On page 6 of Lynn Douglas Morton's "The Morton Story" (privately published in 1993 by L. Douglas Morton), one reads: "There is a discrepancy of his date of death. One source gives 1876, while the other says 1880."
