Eldred's great-grandfather (Cassius Clay Charley) came to the Rogue Valley in 1852. The Charley family established the first Hereford herd in the Rogue Valley in 1915. Eldred's father (Floyd Sharpe Charley) started the first beef 4-H club. Eldred continued a family tradition of 4-H activity with a tractor club, gem and mineral club, and beef club.

During WWII, Eldred was in the Signal Corps, stationed in Puerto Rico.

Eldred married Iris Marvel Corcoran. Eldred and Iris had the following children: Glowrene, Jacqueline, Loyal william, Curtis Floyd, and Kevin Claus. In addition to thier children, Eldred and Iris raised 130 foster children during a 30-year period.

Eldred worked as a rancher and state weighmaster.

Eldred died at Providence Hospital & Medical Center.

The funeral for Eldred was at the Siskiyou Chapel, 2100 Siskiyou Blvd., Medford. Karen Oaks officiated with burial in Siskiyou Memorial Park.
