He was the son of Charles W. Bump and Elmira Bullock.

He was the husband of Charlotte Sophia Thomas (1838-1915).

J. W. Bump, a veteran of the civil war died at his home in this city yesterday, aged sixty-four years. Mr. Bump served under General W.T. Sherman in his famous march to the sea. He was a member of the Twenty-fifth Wisconsin Infantry. He came to Spokane in 1890. He leaves a wife, three daughters and a son.
