Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Before entering the army, he was an Overland express rider. During the Mexican War, he served in the First Pennsylvania Infantry in 1846. Later he joined an expedition to Cuba in 1850 and took part in expeditions to Nicaragua. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he became a major in the 70th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment commanded by General Sickles and was later promoted to colonel. Although severely injured at Williamsburg in May, 1962, he recovered and participated in the battles of Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. His previous wounds continued to hobble his active duty and he accepted the command of the 11th regiment of the veteran reserve corp. After the war, for his gallantry, he was raised to the brevet brigadier general on January 3, 1866 and was mustered out later than year. He was later appointed as a New York custom inspector, a position he held until his death.
