James W Adkisson was the son of Absalom and Sarah "Sallie" Adkisson, born in Roane County 1 Dec 1819. He married Elizabeth Ann Margrave on 6 March 1841 in Roane County where they continued to live until their deaths. Together James and Elizabeth were the parents of at least 9 children: Cynthia b. 1844, Henrietta b. 1847, Sarah "Sallie" b. 1849, William F b. 1851, Martha "Mattie" b. 1853, Victoria Savannah b. 1856, James B b. 1859, Mary Alice b. 1863, and Rufus b. 1868.

Like all of his brothers, James served with the Union Army during the Civil War. His two youngest brothers, Yerby and Absalom lost their lives during the conflict. James, along with 3 of his brothers, was part of the 3rd Tennessee Infantry, 3rd Regiment, Co H; James rank - Captain.

James lived his entire life in Roane and farmed there up until his death 12 Nov 1882.
