Mary Springen was born in Flesberg, Norway and emigrated to America in 1857 at four years of age. The Oleson family came to the US through Canada and first settled in Detroit, Michigan. Mary's father's surname was Oleson, but was changed sometime after their arrival in the US. Mary and her brother were known as Mary and Ole Springen. The Springen family made their way to Wisconsin where Ole Springen married in 1892.
Mary came to Grandfalls during what has been referred to as the 'Scandinavian Invasion of Ward County'. She arrived with her brother and his wife Lena and their young children around 1896-97. The Springen's built the first Grandfalls Hotel in 1897 having acquired the SW corner, of Ave D and 2nd Street. The Grandfalls Hotel was a two story building with wide porches and railings on both sides. Mary ran the hotel while her brother Ole ran a Freight Wagon between Grandfalls and Monahans. He and wife Lena also owned and operated a farm.
Shortly after Mary's death in 1905, Ole sold the Grandfalls Hotel and moved his family to Beaumont, California. There he owned and operated a Blacksmith Shop in 1910, and in the 1920's and 30's was a farmer. He died in 1937 at the age of 83, and Lena died in 1948.
