After the death of her mother in Mississippi in 1839, Annie S.J. Alston is shown living in the household of her uncle James J. Alston and what looks to be his mother Elizabeth in Tipton, Tennessee. This is shown on the 1850 census. Her sister had already married earlier that year.
This had all followed a custody battle between her uncle in Tennessee who was her testimantary guardian and her remarried mother in Mississippi. Alexander had named his unmarried brother James guardian of his young daughters when he died. Frances won in court in 1842, but sadly passed away just a few years later.
