Born and raised in Minneapolis, MN, Norman David Schaaf served in the U. S. Navy in the Pacific theatre during World War II. He met his first wife, Addie Caroline Yarborough, in San Francisco, while on shore leave. She had followed her older sister Julia Felma ("Pep") to the city to work during the war years. Addie was raised in MaComb, Mississippi.
Norman was in the Naval Reserve for 2 years and 8 months before the United States entered World War II. He was trained on the USS Wyoming from 13 June - 19 October 1941. During the war, he served on the USS Nashville (1941-1943) and the USS Oakland (17 July 1943 until the end of the War), where he was Storekeeper. He served during seminal battles in the Pacific during the war.
After their first child was born, in her father's hometown in 1948, the family relocated to the South, first to Baton Rouge, LA and eventually to Houston, TX, where they raised their three children, Judy, Norman (b. 1950) and Nancy (b. 1952). Norman worked primarily for an insurance agency, American General, in Houston, but he was an avid "short order" cook, a skill he had learned in the Navy, and always wanted to operate a restaurant. In his later career, he owned a series of small restaurants, first the Circle K Cafe on Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis, then Norm's in the resort town of Mille Lacs, Minnesota, and later, in Sacramento, California, he owned and operated the Spotlight Cafe.
His hobby was woodworking and after his retirement, he volunteered his time for several years teaching high school students in Sacramento this craft.
Norman's ashes were scattered in San Francisco Bay and this memorial alone commemorates him.
