Civil War Union Brevet Major General. Born in Warrenton, Virginia, at the start of the Civil War, he was commissioned Colonel in command of the 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry. He led the 24th Michigan in actions at Manassas, South Mountain, Antietam and at Gettysburg where he was severely wounded. After he recovered he commanded the brigade as interim Brigadier General during the Campaign of the Wilderness in 1864. For meritorious service, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he remained in the Regular Army as commander of the 21st Infantry.
