Alois was born in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, the son of Johann Leonhard Gramlich and Catharina Dorsam. He left Germany for America, arriving in Baltimore about 1846. By 1853, he was employed as a butcher in Chicago. While he was in Chicago Alois met Matilda Watkins, the twenty-one year old daughter of Samuel and Sophie Watkins. They were married at Petersburg in Menard County, Illinois on July 28, 1853.

In 1855 they left Illinois and headed for the west coast. Matildas brother, James, went with them. They arrived in Sarpy County and in 1856 their oldest son, Samuel, was born. They decided to stay in Nebraska.

Matilda and Alois had eleven children: Samuel, John, Mary, Barbara (Lake), Louis, Susan (Ewell), Eli, George, Fred, Alice (Rice), and Adam. Matilda died from consumption in 1882 at the age of 49 years.

Alois served as a member of the school board in his district. He also served as county commissioner and supported Papillion for the location of the county seat. As he grew older, his son Samuel managed the family farm and Alois became involved with social activities. He was an old time granger and a member of the Old Settlers Association of Sarpy County. He helped found the Sarpy County Agricultural Society and served as its president in the late 1890s.

Alois died from heart failure at the age of 81 near his home south of Papillion. At the time he was living with his son, Samuel, and family.
