Motion Picture Director, Producer. He was an awarding British film director. Knighted in 1952, he was an actor and directed on stage before turning to films in the 1930s. He was the first film director to be knighted. He received an Academy Award for Best Director of "Oliver!" in 1968. He was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Direction. Born into a theatrical family, he was educated at The King's School in Canterbury before going into the theater. "Midshipman Easy" in 1935 was his first solo directorial project. He last project was in 1972 "Follow Me!"
