Civil War Union Brigadier General. A career US Army officer, he graduated from West Point in in 1846 and served in the Mounted Rifles. At the start of the Civil War, he was a Captain in charge of recruiting for the New York Volunteer Cavalry. In 1862, he was commissioned a Colonel and commanded the 19th New York Cavalry Brigade during most of the Virginia operations and was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers in October 1864. After the war, he remained in the Regular Army as a Major, served in various western outposts and died while on active duty with the 7th Cavalry.
