Civil War Union Brigadier General. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, he raised the 31st Indiana Volunteer Regiment and was appointed Colonel. He led his regiment at the Battle of Fort Donelson and was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh. In July 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General and commanded a brigade at the Battle of Richmond, Kentucky. At Chattanooga, he commanded the 1st Division of the IV Corps, led his division during the Atlanta Campaign and commanded a Provisional Division at the Battle of Nashville. For leadership and devotion to duty, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on March 5, 1865. After the war, he pursued a legal career and practiced law until his death.
