Civil War Union Brigadier General. He graduated from West Point in 1846, served as a Lieutenant of mounted infantry in the Mexican War and held assignments in New Mexico preceding the Civil War. In the Civil War, he served as Colonel in command of a brigade in the Army of Tennessee and distinguished himself in a cavalry raid in Mississippi. In June 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General serving as division commander in the Armies of the Potomac and the Cumberland. He participated in the march on Atlanta, fought at the Battle of Nashville and was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers in 1865. At the end of the war, he remained in the Regular Army and received a permanent commission as Lieutenant Colonel of Cavalry in August 1866. He returned to duty in the western territories, served in Oregon and California, until he retired from active service as a Colonel, in April 1878.
