Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he served in the Mexican War as a Captain in the 2nd Ohio Volunteers. At the start of the Civil War, he enlisted as a Private in 11th Indiana Infantry, served in campaigns in western Virginia and was promoted Colonel in August, 1861. He led his regiment in the capture of Fort Donelson, at Shiloh, Corinth and at Vicksburg. Promoted Brigadier General in April 1863, he was transferred to the Department of Arkansas and commanded an infantry regiment, two cavalry companies with a artillary at the White River in Arkansas, until the end of the war. After the war, he settled in Indianapolis and in 1900, was appointed postmaster by President William McKinley serving until his death.
