The daughter of William & Elizabeth White of England, late of Boston, Suffolk Co MA, Margaret married three times:
1) Robert Colwell, c1660 in Boston, Suffolk Co MA; they separated in 1666 & divorced 21 Jul 1667. They had an unknown number of children, only two names are known: Robert Colwell Jr (1662-1748) & Elizabeth Colwell (1664-1693).

2) Thomas D Wallen/Walling on 19 Jun 1669 in Providence Co RI, s/o Ralph & Joyce Wallen of England, later of Plymouth Colony MA. He died 19 Jul 1674. They had two known children: William B Wallen (1670-1694) & John Cornelius Wallen (1672-1761).

3) Daniel Abbott on 25 Dec 1678 in Providence Co RI, s/o Daniel & Mary (Mills) Abbott of England, late of Providence Co RI. They had two known children: Mary Abbott (1679-) & Daniel Abbott III (1682-1760) who served as Deputy Governor of the Colony of Rhode Island.

The following story is of interest because both Margaret and Thomas were married to others when the incident occurred, but only Margaret was "punished"; a sign of the times. It reminds me of the story of the "Scarlet Letter".

Excerpt from P. Streeter, 2000:
"....William's daughter, Margaret, already married to Robert Colwell, ran away with her married neighbor, Thomas Walling; both deserted their families. Colwell secured his divorce 2 July 1667; Margaret had returned to Boston and was ordered to be publicly whipped 15 stripes and was fined £5 in October 1666. Colwell went to Long Island, Walling also obtained a divorce and married Margaret in 1669. After his death (Thomas') in 1674, her third husband, Daniel Abbott, took her to court. Apparently they reconciled, she was named in his will."

Perry Streeter does not say why Margaret's third husband "took her to court".

Excerpt from "Thomas Walling & His Way With Women" by William B Saxbe Jr, Article printed in 'The American Genealogist', Apr 1998, Pgs 91-100:
" 'Daniel Abbott, her third husband...filed the following prohibition against her:
'Whereas my wife Margrett through her Maddnes of folly & Turbulency of her Currupt will, hath often Threatened to Ruinate my family, Routeing me (as she saith) of horse & Foote, Destroying me Root & Branch, putting out one of her owne Eyes to putt out Both mine, & sett my house on fire: And is since departed from me takeing away my Children without my Consent. And as I have been Enformed, is now plotting mischeife with some, of her Turbulent Spiritt, that when I am Absent from home to Rifle my house & take away my Goodes, to accomplish her Divelish Resolution against me. These are therefore, not only to advise, but alsoe to Charge all persons upon theire Perill to forbare any such illegal proceedings, And alsoe do heareby foreworne, & forbid all persons whatsoever, to forbare Bargaineing with, Contracting of Debts, or Receiveing any part of my Estate of my sd wife Margrett without my approbation. Published 7th of August 1683.'"

...and in 1717 (Margaret died this year):
" 'Upon the Cumplaint of Mrs Margret Abbott widow of mr Daniel Abbott deceased that shee wants Releif and being sensible that the sd Daniel Abbott her deceased husband Left a Compitent Esstate: suffuciant to Releife his sd widdow and being Informed that his son Daniel Abbott Administred upon sd Esstate and being also sumthing sinsable of the same Where upon wee doe order as hereby it is ordered that the sd surviveing Daniel Abbott shall pay to the Relief of his mother the sd Margreet Abbott the sum of Eight shillings Per weeke Currant money into the hands of one of the ouer seers of the poor of sd Towne Except he provide for her sum other way to her Content untill sum further order be taken.'"

NOTES:
At different times in history, the name of Wallen is recorded with variations such as Wallin and Walling. The passenger list of the ship "Anne", dated Jul 1623, lists Ralph's (1590-1633) surname as "Wallen." To avoid confusion, my ancestors who descended from Ralph will be shown as Wallen.

Evidence has been provided to me proving this Margaret is NOT a daughter of the William White who married Elizabeth Cadman and was associated with the Mayflower.

North Burial Ground - Wikipedia:
"The North Burial Ground is a 110-acre cemetery in Providence, Rhode Island dating to 1700, the first public cemetery in Providence. It is located north of downtown Providence, bounded by North Main Street, Branch Avenue, the Moshassuck River, and Cemetery Street. Its main entrance is at the junction of Branch and North Main. The burial ground is one of the larger municipal cemeteries in Southern New England, and it accepts 220 to 225 burials per year."

Cemeteries in Rhode Island - Wikipedia:
"From the time of its founding by Roger Williams in 1636, Rhode Island had strict separation of religious and government institutions. Therefore, Providence had no state churches with adjacent public burial grounds, as most New England towns had. Instead, townspeople buried their dead in family plots on individual farms."
