Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Willistown, Pennsylvania, he began his military career graduating from the Military Academy at West Point in 1837. He was serving as a Captain in the 1st US Artillery Corps, when he took a position at Military Academy as Assistant Professor of Mathematics in 1849. At the start of the Civil War, he was a Major and part of an expedition that was sent to Florida to quell the rebellion in that state, but was taken prisoner by the Confederates. After being exchanged in August 1862, he was appointed Brigadier General in the Union Army X Corps. He commanded his forces at Folly Island, the Second Battle of Charlston Harbor and at the Military District of Florida in early 1864. Toward the close of the war, he was commander of the defenses at Norfolk and Portsmouth Virginia, and for his services was brevetted Brigadier General in the Regular Army. After the war he remained in the Army and served in the 1st US Artillery Corps until he retired in 1881, at the rank of Colonel. He died at the age of 73 in New York City.
