Augustus Dwight Beard was an escapee from a North Carolina prison where he was serving a life sentence for the murder of Augustus_Bounous in 1932. He merely swapped clothes and walked right out of the prison. In Texas, he was identified in seven Dallas holdups and was suspected in five more in Forth Worth. He had also recently been charged in the killing of an Atlanta police officer. On December 23, 1935, while attemting to rob a filling station in Oak Cliff, he shot and killed a retired Dallas police detective John_R._Roberts, who had tried to intervene in the robbery. Beard was slightly wounded in the arm by one of Roberts' bullets. The former North Carolina State College football player was condemned to die for the Roberts murder. He was 27 when executed.
