The son of John & Sarah (Trimmer) Bupp, he married Amelia Burd and fathered Laura (b. ? - married Levi Merkel), Ezra Doty (b. 11/04/57), and one other who died. In 1850, he was living in Centre Township, Perry County; he moved to Piqua, Miami County, Ohio, before the Civil War.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted presumably in or near Miami County, Ohio. mustered into federal service at Cincinnati's Camp Dennison June 20, 1861, as a private with Co. F, 11th Ohio Infantry, and honorably discharged at term's end June 20, 1864.

He returned to Perry County to live out his life, dying from a "cerebral hemorrhage."
