Second Lieut. Zemeriah H. Lowdermilk, Third NC Infantry, Confederate Army. Fought in Battle of Richmond, Battle of South Mound MD, In Sharpesburg, and Battle of Fredericksburg VA, all in 1862. Wounded in Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. Returned to the Battle of Mine Run in Nov. 1863. Participated in The Wilderness campaign, was captured at Battle of Spotsylvania May 12, 1864. Remained a POW for over a year, various states. One of the "Immortal 600."

In 1868 he and his family moved west, living briefly in Iowa, Illinois, and finally, in Lowell and Galena KS. He later relocated to Joplin MO, where he started the first telephone company.
