Article from the "News-Tribune" of Britt, Iowa dated 2 Feb 1955:
Has Open House
On 80th Birthday
Mrs. Christine Fox held open house at her home Saturday afternoon from 2 to 5 for her eightieth birthday. Around ninety friends and relatives called, coming from Britt, Wesley, Crystal Lake, Sheffield, Ames and Newton.
Hostesses were the daughters, Mrs. H. R. Higdon and Mrs. Gerald Higdon; daughters-in-law, Mrs. Lyal Fox and Mrs. Jerry Fox; and granddaughters, Mrs. Richard Schubert, Mrs. Earl Schultz, Mrs. Arvin Larson, Mrs. John Fox and Jackie Fox.
The serving table, covered with a lace cloth over green, was centered with a pink floral piece and pink candles. The pink napkins bore the inscription, Christine B. Fox, 1875-1955.
Mrs. Fox's children, Lyal, Jerry and Minnie, of Britt, and Glyde, of Newton, were all present for the occasion.
Many gifts and cards were on display for which Mrs. Fox is very grateful and also to those helping make it a wonderful day.

Extract from the book "Recollections of Britt, Iowa" published by the Britt Centennial Committee (1978), pp. 43-44:
Christine Larson, a native of Denmark, came to Britt with her parents, the Lars Larsons, in 1878 when she was three years old. They were to have been met by her uncle, Martin Larson, from Buffalo Grove, nine miles northwest of Britt. He arrived one day too early to meet them and returned home disappointed. When the little group arrived the next day, they stood at the depot, not knowing where to go. A friendly Dane, Peter Jensen, drove by in a lumber wagon and pointed out Buffalo Grove, where Martin Larson lived. They set out on foot for the lone clump of trees.
Mr. Larson found employment on a farm near Forest City and Mrs. Larson kept house for a motherless family. The farmer had no money to pay Mr. Larson for his seasonal labor, but gave him three head of young cattle in payment. As he was driving his cattle home, a prairie fire swept toward him, with flames leaping high as it devoured the tall, dry grass of the virgin prairie in its path. For his own safety, Mr. Larson burned out a space of ground, drove the cattle onto it to guard his summer's wages, and the flames swept past him.
In later years, the Larsons built a home and started a grove. About all one had to do to plant a grove was to sharpen a green stick and put it in the wet ground. It would root and grow.
Christine received the last two years of her education in Britt. At that time, neither town nor country schools went beyond the eighth grade. Christine began teaching in the rural schools at the age of seventeen. Her largest was Orthel No. 1 with thirty-eight pupils. One student was older than the teacher. Her first month's wages were $27.00 and at the close of her teaching career, she drew a monthly wage of $35.00. She walked to her rural school on Monday morning, boarded near the school during the week, and walked home again on Friday night. Her wardrobe consisted of two or three good dresses and several aprons.
Christine was married to Walter Fox in 1895, and they farmed northwest of Britt for many years. Mrs. Fox died in November, 1963.
