A 1953 graduate of Tucker High School in Tucker, Ga., Janice was active in the Tucker High School women's basketball program where she was the high scorer in her senior year when her team won the Dekalb County Championship. She exhibited a love of sports that was instilled in her by her father who had played minor league baseball in the South Carolina textile leagues. As an active parent supporter, she in turn instilled that love in her own two sons as they played baseball from Little League to High School. Her love of sports extended to college football too where she was a "larger than life" fan of The Gator Nation and the University of Florida.
In addition to a sports enthusiast, Janice was also an animal lover and she worked for nine years at the Sprayberry Animal Hospital in Marietta, Ga. where the staff referred to her as "the dog whisperer."
Married for almost 53 years to her husband Gerald, Janice raised two sons who brought into her life wives that Janice loved as nothing less than daughters of her own. Her love extended well beyond her own children and she frequently spoke of many "an adopted son or daughter" that she took under her wing and called her "Mom or Gan-ma."
Janice is survived by her husband, Gerald D. Baxter along with her two sons and their wives, Charles S. Baxter and his wife Linda R. Baxter of Evans, Ga. and Gerald L. Baxter and his wife Cheryl S. Baxter of Columbia, S.C. In addition, Mrs. Baxter is survived by her four grandchildren, Steven Ryan Baxter , Charles Wesley Baxter , Gerald Healy Baxter , and Elizabeth Marlene Baxter .
Services will be held on June 15th at 11 a.m. at Northeast Presbyterian Church in Columbia, S.C.
