He played Major League baseball as a pitcher for fourteen seasons (1952 to 1964) for the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Baltimore Orioles. A National League All-Star in 1953, 1954, and 1955, he was a member of the 1960 World Championship Pirates team that defeated the New York Yankees 4 games to 3. He is most famous in baseball history for the game he pitched for the Pirates against the Milwaukee Braves on May 29, 1959. In that game Harvey Haddix threw 12 perfect no-hit, no walk, no run innings, only to lose the game in the 13th inning.
