Professional Tennis Player, Presidential Cabinet Secretary, US Diplomat. A big left handed Harvard tennis player, he won the Intercolligiate title in 1899, and was ranked in the United States top ten four times between 1898 and 1901. He is best known for launching in 1900 the great worldwide tennis competition that bears his name: The Davis Cup. With Harvard school mates Malcolm Whitman and Holcombe Ward they won the first competiton 3-0 over the British Isles. He was appointed by President Calvin Coolidge as United States Secretary of War, serving from 1925 to 1929. During the administration of President Herbert Hoover, he was named Govenor-General of the Philippines. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1956 and the city of St. Louis honored him with a star on their Walk of Fame.
