Nevada State Journal, 11/26/1950:

Bowers Mansion is Given Precious Drapes and Books from Early Days. … Books Received. The first edition books, entitled “American Eloquence,” were received recently by the Bowers Mansion from Mr. A. E. Larsen, of Merced, California…Inscribed in both volumes in the handwriting of Eilley Bowers is the following: “Elias Owens book, presented by Mr. Alison Bowers, December 24, 1873, by hanging it on a Christmas tree in Washoe County, Nevada.” The Artie Larsen by whom the books were given to the Bowers Mansion is the grandson of Elias Owens. Elias Owens and his family located in Franktown in 1860, coming directly across the plains in an ox drawn covered wagon from Missouri. In a letter accompanying the gift of the books to the mansion, A. E. Larsen says in part:

“In 1868 my mother, Mary J. Owens, married my father, Wood Larsen, and they established their home in Antelope Valley on the Walker River in Mono county, and there they raised their family of six children, of which I was the youngest. I was born in 1882.

In 1888 my grandfather sold his farm in Washoe Valley and moved to Santa Cruz county, California. When he did so he gave each child in the family a memento of our Washoe county home, and to me “Artie,” he gave these two books.”
